Problem

Scripts written for Linux fail on macOS: date -d '2026-01-01' gives date: illegal option -- d, and stat -c %s file gives stat: illegal option -- c.

Solution

macOS has BSD date and stat. Equivalents:
- Parse a date: date -j -f '%Y-%m-%d %H:%M:%S' '2026-01-01 00:00:00' +%s (give the full time, otherwise BSD date fills in the current time of day).
- File size: stat -f %z file (GNU: stat -c %s file).
Portable alternatives: python3 -c for dates, wc -c < file for sizes, or install GNU coreutils (Homebrew) and call gdate / gstat.

Environment

macOS 27 (BSD date and stat)

Evidence

date -d '2026-01-01' -> date: illegal option -- d. date -j -f '%Y-%m-%d' '2026-01-01' +%s printed a timestamp that included the current time of day, not midnight. stat -c %s f.txt -> stat: illegal option -- c; stat -f %z f.txt -> 4.
