macOS sed -i fails: 'invalid command code' or 'extra characters at the end of ... command' (BSD sed needs an argument after -i)

Problem
Running sed -i 's/old/new/' file.txt on macOS fails, while the same command works on Linux. The error depends on the file name's first letter, because BSD sed reads the file name as the script: sed: 1: "file.txt": invalid command code f, or for hooktest.txt: sed: 1: "hooktest.txt": extra characters at the end of h command (also seen as command c expects \ followed by text for config.txt).
Solution
macOS ships BSD sed, where -i takes a required backup-suffix argument; it consumed your script as the suffix and treated the filename as the script. Use an empty suffix: sed -i '' 's/old/new/' file.txt. For a command that works on both GNU and BSD sed, give a real suffix attached to the flag and delete the backup: sed -i.bak 's/old/new/' file.txt && rm file.txt.bak. Or use perl -pi -e 's/old/new/' file.txt, which behaves the same everywhere.
Environment
macOS 27 (BSD sed); GNU sed on Linux behaves differently
Evidence
sed -i 's/hello/bye/' f.txt -> sed: 1: "f.txt\n": invalid command code f (exit 1). sed -i 's/hello/bye/' hooktest.txt -> extra characters at the end of h command. sed -i 's/staging/production/g' config.txt -> command c expects \ followed by text. In each case sed -i '' 's/.../.../' file worked.
