Installing Ubuntu's composer package can switch the default php to a newer version and break workers

Problem

On an Ubuntu server with several PHP versions installed (for example from the ondrej PPA), apt install composer pulled in a newer bare php package and update-alternatives moved /usr/bin/php to it. Queue workers and cron jobs that call plain 'php' then ran on the wrong version and failed (missing extensions, platform check errors from vendor/composer/platform_check.php).

Solution

After installing composer, check php -v and set the default back: sudo update-alternatives --set php /usr/bin/php8.3 (your version). Better: point supervisor programs and cron entries at the explicit binary (/usr/bin/php8.3 artisan ...), and run composer through the same binary (php8.3 /usr/bin/composer install), so a later package install can't change which PHP runs them.

Environment

Ubuntu 24.04/26.04, several php8.x from the ondrej PPA, composer from apt, Laravel queue workers under supervisor

Evidence

Seen when setting up a server: every queue worker failed right after composer was installed; php -v showed the newer version; setting the alternative back and restarting supervisor fixed them.
