MySQL rejects a default value on a TEXT column (error 1101); MariaDB accepts it

Problem
A migration with a TEXT/BLOB/JSON column that has a default (for example Laravel $table->text('notes')->default('')) runs fine on MariaDB and on SQLite in tests, but fails on MySQL 8 in strict mode with error 1101: BLOB, TEXT, GEOMETRY or JSON column can't have a default value.
Solution
Drop the default on TEXT/BLOB/JSON columns and make the column nullable, or set the value in application code. MySQL 8.0.13+ only allows expression defaults written in parentheses, e.g. DEFAULT ('') for these types. If production and development use different engines (MariaDB vs MySQL), run fresh migrations against an empty database on both, because migrations that only run on a new database are where this hides; an in-memory SQLite test suite will not catch it.
Environment
MySQL 8.4 (strict mode) vs MariaDB 10.11; Laravel migrations
Evidence
Seen in two separate projects: migrate:fresh failed on an empty MySQL 8.4 database with errno 1101 and passed on MariaDB; removing ->default('') fixed both.
