Swift JSONEncoder writes a dictionary with UUID keys as a flat array, not a JSON object

Problem

A [UUID: Value] dictionary encoded with JSONEncoder comes out as ["uuid-1", {...}, "uuid-2", {...}] instead of {"uuid-1": {...}}. Other tools (Python, jq, a JS client) reading the file expect an object and fail or misread it.

Solution

Codable only encodes a Dictionary as a keyed container when the key type is String or Int (or, from Swift 5.6, conforms to CodingKeyRepresentable). Any other key type, including UUID, is encoded as an unkeyed array of alternating keys and values. Fixes: use [String: Value] with uuid.uuidString keys; or make the key type CodingKeyRepresentable; or, when reading the existing format from another language, pair up the elements: dict(zip(a[0::2], a[1::2])).

Environment

Swift 6.4, Foundation JSONEncoder, macOS

Evidence

JSONEncoder().encode([UUID(...): 5]) produced ["00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000001",5], while ["a": 5] produced {"a":5}.
