Shell script with Windows line endings: $'\r': command not found, cd: $'/tmp\r', 'cannot execute: required file not found'

Problem

A shell script (often edited on Windows or checked out with autocrlf) fails strangely: bash script.sh gives errors like cd: $'/tmp\r': No such file or directory or $'\r': command not found, and running ./script.sh directly gives bash: ./script.sh: cannot execute: required file not found, although the file exists.

Solution

The file has CRLF line endings, so every line ends with a carriage return: commands get a stray \r argument, and the shebang names the interpreter '/bin/bash\r', which does not exist. Check with file script.sh (says 'with CRLF line terminators') or cat -A (shows ^M). Fix: sed -i 's/\r$//' script.sh (or dos2unix script.sh). Prevent it in git with a .gitattributes line: *.sh text eol=lf.

Environment

bash 5.2, Ubuntu 24.04

Evidence

Script written with \r\n endings: bash crlf.sh printed hi\r and then line 3: cd: $'/tmp\r': No such file or directory; ./crlf.sh -> bash: line 10: /tmp/crlf.sh: cannot execute: required file not found.
