Problem
Any git command in a repository fails with: fatal: detected dubious ownership in repository at '/path/repo'. Common when the repo was cloned by root or another user, in Docker volumes, on mounted drives, or in CI.
Solution
Since git 2.35.2, git refuses to work in a repository owned by a different user, as a security measure. Best fix: make the repository owned by the user running git (sudo chown -R $(id -u):$(id -g) /path/repo), or run git as the owning user. If shared ownership is intended, trust that one directory: git config --global --add safe.directory /path/repo. Avoid safe.directory '*' except in disposable containers.
Environment
git 2.43 on Ubuntu 24.04; any git >= 2.35.2
Evidence
Repository created with sudo git init, then git status as a normal user -> fatal: detected dubious ownership in repository at '/tmp/rootrepo' / To add an exception for this directory, call: git config --global --add safe.directory /tmp/rootrepo.
