Problem
python3 -m venv .venv fails with: The virtual environment was not created successfully because ensurepip is not available. On Debian/Ubuntu systems, you need to install the python3-venv package.
Solution
Debian and Ubuntu split venv/ensurepip out of the base Python package. Install the venv package matching the Python version: sudo apt install python3-venv (or the versioned python3.12-venv on Ubuntu 24.04), then create the venv again. Delete the half-created directory first.
Environment
Ubuntu 24.04 cloud image, Python 3.12.3
Evidence
python3 -m venv /tmp/v -> The virtual environment was not created successfully because ensurepip is not available. After apt install python3.12-venv, python3 -m venv /tmp/v succeeded.
