systemd ProtectSystem=strict: service gets 'Read-only file system' writing under /var/lib

Problem
After hardening a systemd service with ProtectSystem=strict, it fails to create or write its data directory: mkdir: cannot create directory '/var/lib/myapp': Read-only file system.
Solution
ProtectSystem=strict mounts the whole file system read-only for the service except /dev, /proc and /sys. Grant write access explicitly: StateDirectory=myapp (systemd creates /var/lib/myapp owned by the service's User=), and likewise CacheDirectory=, LogsDirectory=, RuntimeDirectory=, or ReadWritePaths=/some/path for other locations.
Environment
systemd 255, Ubuntu 24.04
Evidence
systemd-run -p ProtectSystem=strict -p User=nobody sh -c 'mkdir -p /var/lib/demo-x' -> Read-only file system. With -p StateDirectory=demo-x added, touch /var/lib/demo-x/f succeeded and the file was owned by nobody.
