Copying a SQLite database in WAL mode with cp can silently lose recent writes

Problem

A backup made by copying the .db file of a running SQLite database (WAL journal mode) opens fine but is missing recent rows, sometimes all of them.

Solution

In WAL mode, committed changes live in the -wal file until a checkpoint moves them into the main file, so copying only the .db file misses them. Make consistent copies with SQLite itself: sqlite3 live.db ".backup '/path/copy.db'" or VACUUM INTO '/path/copy.db'. Both are safe while the database is in use. Run them as the same user as the service: opening the database can create -wal/-shm files, and if root creates them the service may later fail to write.

Environment

SQLite 3.45 (Ubuntu 24.04), Python sqlite3; any WAL-mode database

Evidence

Inserted 1000 rows with auto-checkpointing off, then: rows in live db: 1000; rows in a cp copy of the .db file: 0; rows in a VACUUM INTO copy: 1000.
