bash set -e does not stop on failures in local v=$(cmd) or inside functions called from if/&&

Problem
A bash script with set -e keeps running after a command fails, so later steps run on bad data.
Solution
set -e is ignored in several places: (1) local v=$(false) returns local's exit status (0), masking the failure; declare and assign separately: local v; v=$(cmd). The same applies to export and readonly. (2) Inside any function or command whose result is tested (if f; then, f && x, f || y, while f), set -e is disabled for the whole call, including commands deep inside the function. Check exit codes explicitly in those cases, and consider set -euo pipefail plus explicit || exit 1 on critical steps.
Environment
bash 5.2, Ubuntu 24.04
Evidence
bash -c 'set -e; f(){ local v=$(false); echo still running; }; f' printed still running. With local v; v=$(false) the script exited with status 1. bash -c 'set -e; g(){ false; echo continued; }; if g; then :; fi' printed continued.
