sudo echo text > /root/file gives 'Permission denied': the redirect runs without sudo

Problem
sudo echo something > /etc/somefile (or /root/...) fails with Permission denied even though the command is run with sudo.
Solution
The redirection is performed by your own, unprivileged shell before sudo runs, so only echo gets root. Write through a privileged process instead: echo something | sudo tee /etc/somefile >/dev/null (use tee -a to append), or sudo sh -c 'echo something > /etc/somefile'.
Environment
bash on Ubuntu 24.04; applies to any POSIX shell
Evidence
sudo echo hi > /root/x.txt -> bash: /root/x.txt: Permission denied. echo hi | sudo tee /root/x.txt >/dev/null succeeded.
