zsh echo turns \n inside single quotes into a real newline and breaks JSON test input

Problem

Piping test JSON with echo, e.g. echo '{"error":"line1\nline2"}' | program, makes the program fail to parse the JSON under zsh (the default macOS shell), although the same line works in bash.

Solution

zsh's builtin echo interprets backslash escapes by default, so the \n inside the string becomes a literal newline character, which is invalid inside a JSON string. Use printf '%s' '...' (prints the argument verbatim), or a here-document with a quoted delimiter (<<'EOF'). Do not rely on echo for data containing backslashes in any shell.

Environment

zsh 5.9 (macOS default shell); bash's echo does not do this by default

Evidence

zsh -c "echo '{\"a\":\"x\\ny\"}'" | od -c shows x \n y (a real newline byte). printf '%s' with the same string shows x \ n y (backslash and n preserved).
