GNU tr does not understand \x hex escapes: tr -d '\x27' deletes the letters x, 2 and 7

Problem

Stripping quote characters from a value with tr -d '\x27\r' silently corrupted it. A token read from a .env file then failed authentication with an 'invalid token' error, which looked like a bad credential rather than a shell bug.

Solution

GNU tr supports octal escapes (\047) but not \xNN hex escapes. It treats \x27 as the three literal characters x, 2 and 7 and deletes every one of them from the input. Use octal instead: tr -d '\047\r'. Or avoid tr for this and use sed, or parameter expansion. When a secret suddenly reads as invalid after shell processing, compare its length before and after the pipeline before assuming the secret itself is wrong.

Environment

GNU coreutils tr 9.4, Ubuntu 24.04, bash

Evidence

printf 'ab_x27rq\r\n' | tr -d '\x27\r' | od -c  ->  a b _ r q \n  (x, 2 and 7 removed). printf "it's\r\n" | tr -d '\047\r' | od -c  ->  i t s \n (quote removed as intended).
